The Sacred Heart Cathedral Church has the title of the oldest church in Delhi and is also one of the oldest churches in the city. The church is a Romanic Catholic Church which is also known by the name Mother Church of the Catholic Archdiocese in Delhi. Pope John Paul II, who was Pope from 1978 to 2005, had visited the Sacred Heart Cathedral Church in 1986.
When was Sacred Heart Cathedral Church constructed?
Sacred Heart Cathedral Church is located on Bhai Vir Singh Marg and is spread over an area of 14 acres, if the area of two schools between which the church stands is also taken for calculation. The two schools are the Convent of Jesus and Mary and the Saint Columbus Schools.
It was Father Luke’s idea and initiative to build the Sacred heart Cathedral Church. Father Luke was a member of the Franciscan First order, which was founded by Saint Francis of Assisi. The impressive design of this beautiful church was made by the British architect, Henry Medd, who had also contributed in the design of delhi. Though the foundation was laid in 1929 itself by Rev. Dr. E.Vanni, the Archbishop of Agra, the construction of the building began in 1930.
Though most of the financial needs were taken care of by the colonial officers of the British empire, but the main altar was donated by Sir Anthony de Mello who was a spiritual teacher, writer and an Indian Jesuit priest. Also the altar furniture was donated by Archbishop of Agra. The construction of this mind blowing church was completed in 1934 and has been used for public prayers and services since then.
What is the architecture of Sacred Heart Cathedral Church?
This church is not just a religious place for the people, but also a tourist attraction due to its magnificent architecture which is inspired by Italian architecture. The turrets adorns the main entrance of the church and the interior of the church has high ceiling with a dome and beautifully designed arches.
The central altar built in white marble is a visual delight in itself, behind which the main feature of interest is the wall painting of Christ and his apostles representing the last supper.
When to visit Sacred Heart Cathedral Church?
Though the place can be visited any time of the year, but visiting it during Christmas, Easter or when any social or cultural event is being organised is the best. The main attraction during the Christmas time is the decoration, the sound of jingles and hymns, the Christmas vigil service along with the Feast of the Holy Family of Nazareth. The feast takes place before an hour midnight of Christmas Eve.
Though the morning and evening services are held every day, on Sunday services are offered almost all over the day in different languages.
