The Cathedral Church of Redemption is an Anglican church that is also popularly known as the Viceroy Church because of the interest Viceroy Lord Irwin showed in the church. This church is known to be the most beautiful and an marvelous church in the city. The church belongs to the Delhi Diocese of the Church of North India(CNI).
When was the church built?
Earlier the church services were held at a smaller place and only a small number of people could be accommodated there. So the Reverend T. R. dixon who had been appointed the Chaplain brought forward the idea of building a better and a bigger permanent place for people where the spiritual needs of the people could be met. The church is said to be built in early 1900s and took eight years to be complete. It was opened for the public on January 18, 1931.
What is the structure of Cathedral Church of the Redemption?
Henry Alexander Medd, who is also known for designing the magnificent Sacred Heart Cathedral Church and other buildings of the British era, was the designer of this church. The then Viceroy of India, Lord Irwin, was so impressed with the church that he donated an organ and a silver cross to the church along with a beautiful painting that adorns the eastern side of the church. The exteriors and the interiors of the church in complete contrast with each other – exterior being plain and simple, whereas the interior being grandeur and magnificent. Deep openings at the top and its construction style keeps the church cool even when the city is blazing with heat in summers. High domes and arches form a combination that makes the interiors of the church glorious. The tinted glass window in the church also makes it very beautiful. The church’s General Body elects a Pastorate Committee who is responsible for taking care and maintenance of the church.

Even though Cathedral Church of the Redemption is located in a location that is quite noisy and full of hustle bustle, but reaching here will change everything as this place is so peaceful and serene. The church also allows entry of every person belonging to any faith or religion.
The best time to visit the church is during Easter and christmas as the festivals are celebrated with much joy and great enthusiasm here. Many religious performances take place on these days and a concert by the Capital City Minstrels is held here which is loved by all the age groups of people.
What activities does the church performs for the community?
There are many educational and health institutions that are under the Delhi Diocese like St. Stephens College, Delhi, St. Thomas School, Queen Mary’s School, The Victoria School and St. Stephens Hospital. The church tries to do good for the society through its activities in education and health sector and the project named Leprosy Patient’s Children’s Education fund(LPCEF).
